Nereda technology at Vriezenveen wastewater treatment plant goes into service

10-11-2022
After two and a half years under construction, the first phase of the work at Waterschap Vechtstromen’s Vriezenveen wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was completed at the start of October 2022. Following extensive performance testing, the Nereda® plant at the site is now fully operational, treating the wastewater of 13,500 people.
A wastewater plant
Two 1700 m3 Nereda reactors have been installed. Nereda technology simplifies and accelerates the purification process, and the process is now treating all the wastewater at the site. This also saves on the site space required, because the aerobic bacteria form compact mud granules, allowing several treatment steps to be completed simultaneously. The old plant has been turned off ready to be decommissioned in the next phase of the work.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

In a move towards greater sustainability and energy efficiency, the water company has installed a heat pump. In addition, as the new Nereda plant requires less than half the footprint of the previous plant, it has freed up land at Vriezenveen, which has been used for the installation of 1200 solar panels. Once the old plant has been demolished, there will also be space for more solar panels.

Reuse, recycle

As well as its commitment to energy efficiency, the water company has also identified an opportunity to reuse one of the bridges on the original post-sedimentation tank, as part of the upgrade being carried out at its Ootmarsum WWTP.

The new installation at Vriezenveen has the capability to extract more raw materials from the sewage water produced, this is against the backdrop of lower operational and energy costs. Running at peak flow, the site can process 1000 m³/hour with a capacity of 24 MLD.

The next phase of work includes demolishing the old plant and constructing a sludge thickening building. Work on this is due for completion in the summer of 2023.
