The previous WWTP in Wolf Creek featured outdated technology that required an upgrading to meet current water industry legislation and to prepare for the future. Its challenges also included limited space for the upgrades, due to the plant’s urban location. This is one of the reasons that the team chose AquaNereda Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) technology as the footprint is up to 75% smaller. Furthermore, the high-effluent quality and enhanced biological nutrient removal could make the new plant live up to regulations and help to protect the water quality of the Wolf Bay Watershed in Alabama.

“We were honored to work alongside Riviera Utilities and the Aqua-Aerobics team to implement the first Nereda design in North America,” said Denise King, PE, Project Manager for Goodwyn Mills Cawood. “The Nereda Aerobic Granular Sludge Process utilized at the Wolf Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility is the first-of-its-kind in the U.S., providing an efficient and sustainable biological treatment process to improve and protect the water quality of the Wolf Bay Watershed in Alabama.”

The Wolf Creek WWTP was completed in the summer of 2020 and went into operation shortly after. In June 2021, Riviera Utilities also received a distinction award at the Global Water Awards for this same plant.
